C. The Discovery of Chess at the SFPL - 12/9
---
The New York Times Sunday magazine (12/10/23) reported that chess is more popular than ever.

"Chess.com hit the top spot among free gaming apps on the Apple App Store earlier this year. The site's membership, slowly building for more than a decade, has tripled since the pandemic began, to more than 153 million... More people regularly play chess now than at any time in human history - 605 million adults worldwide, according to the United Nations."

How did the world's most popular game originate?

The Discovery of Chess satisfies your need to know! www.immedium.com/products/discoveryofchess.html - this is the first English picture book to show how chess came to be and then changed the world

We captured our title in the wild at Green Apple Books (San Francisco, CA). Share this entertaining and enlightening story with chess-minded children in your life!

The Discovery of Fireworks and Gunpowder

by Phil Amara and Oliver Chin
illustrated by Juan Calle

"[The authors] pack as much STEM information into Dao You's history lesson as there is metallic powder in pyrotechnic stars: 'In a mortar, the lift charge ignites to launch the shell up to 300 miles an hour, more than 1,000 feet high.' Calle's bright cartoons infuse energy and enthusiasm into each spread." - Publishers Weekly

The Treehouse Heroes

by Phil Amara
illustrated by Alina Chau

"In this ecological fable that takes place 'long ago, in a far-east land,' the forests and rivers are populated with mythological beasts...[The artwork] is charming and vibrant. Created by a veteran animator, it recalls the stylized landscapes and figures in The Secret of Kells." - School Library Journal
