A. Soar with The Discovery of Chess
---
We are happy to announce the debut of our newest book The Discovery of Chess
Fourth in our fun series The Asian Hall of Fame, it is the first English picture book on the history of chess! Our guide Dao brings his friends to ancient India to see where it all began. Then they zip back to the future as chess became the most popular game in the world.
"The lovable duo, Emma and Ethan, as well as their Red Panda companion, all beautifully and
colourfully drawn, make the rich origins of chess palatable to a young audience.... [The creators] have
thoroughly succeeded in creating a story that explores chess from many aspects, both
historically and culturally, while maintaining a light and playful picture book."

B. October is Spanish stories in Sacramento
---
This past Saturday, the Sacramento Latino Book & Family Festival was at Sacramento City College (CA). Celebrating diverse voices were actor Edward James Olmos and NASA astronaut José M. Hernández who encouraged the audience, "Se vale sonar en grande. You can dream big."
Emmy-award winning reporter for KCRA Channel 3, Leticia Ordaz, interviewed the event's keynote speaker, labor leader Dolores Huerta.
Promoting childhood literacy, Leticia shared her bilingual books, including her award-winning autobiography That Girl on TV Could be Me! The Journey of a Latina News Anchor.
In that spirit, we encourage kids to follow their dreams.
"Si, se puede!" ("Yes, it can be done").
C. Billie the Unicorn in Los Angeles
---
Brianne Drouhard, author of Billie the Unicorn, autographed at the Los Angeles Public Library's Indie Fest this weekend at the Central Branch.
Also Brianne led an afternoon workshop on how to make a graphic novel and web comic. Students were lucky to get advice from such an experienced creator!
Brianne has contributed to many animated TV shows. Recently she was a character designer on Warner Bros. rebooted Animaniacs, and storyboard artist on Disney's The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse.
Plus she was storyboard director on Nickelodeon's Santiago of the Seas, and director of DC Super Hero Girls.
Go for it, Billie and Brianne!

The Discovery of Ramen
by Phil Amara and Oliver Chin. Illustrated by Juan Calle
"Travel across the world and back in time with Emma and Ethan as they learn all about the history and tradition of ramen from Dao, an adorable red panda who just happens to be an expert on Asian culture, cuisine, and, of course, all things ramen. Amusing anime-style illustrations show the magical, wide-eyed trio flying over China and Japan, tiptoeing past Taiwan, and floating into outer space on a fun, informative, and savory adventure."

Animals Don't, So I Won't!
by David Derrick
"As the appealing cover shows, animal-loving Ben likes to pretend he's wild himself... The animals and their actions are well-chosen for child appeal. Pen-and-ink drawings with watercolor wash combine realistic images with the fantasy of this parent-child game... and the illustrations include irresistible animal noises.... The clever premise of this well-worked-out story is likely to appeal as much to adults as to the children they get to share it with."
