A. New Spring Book #3
---
This month we reprint 5 colorful children's books by author Ying Chang Compestine.
- all feature new bilingual translations in simplified Chinese.
Here are the 3rd and 4th tales in the series Amazing Chinese Inventions,
as the 3 Kang brothers create some of the world's most wonderful things!
The Story of Kites
Illustrated by YongSheng Xuan
The brothers need to protect the rice harvest from the birds. Then they get an idea: if they made wings, they could fly! Using paper, straw, and feathers, the boys experiment with flying many different creations!
The Story of Paper
The boys' teacher catches them goofing off and writes embarrassing notes on their hands which they must show to everyone. Couldn't the teacher could write on something smaller and more private? Can the Kangs concoct a formula for what just may become a very useful school supply?

C. Author Oliver Chin visits Stratford Schools
---
Founded in Danville, CA in 1999, Stratford School is a leading independent private school in the San Francisco Bay Area. Now it has 18 campuses in the region and recently expanded into Southern California.
Stratford's motto "Summa Spes, Summa Res" (Latin for "Highest Hopes, Highest Things") embodies the school's spirit of uplifting education.
Author Oliver Chin certainly shares this goal and has enjoyed meeting Stratford students in San Francisco, San Bruno, Sunnyvale (De Anza), and Los Gatos. This month he shares his stories with kids at Morgan Hill and Sunnyvale (Washington Park).
With the help of Stratford's great librarians and teachers, he looks forward to visiting more campuses in the future!
2. REVIEWS
The Year of the Monkey
Tales from the Chinese Zodiac.
by Oliver Chin
illustrated by Kenji Ono
"I read The Year of the Monkey to my two young neighbors, Lilly and John, who knew nothing about the Chinese New Year or the Chinese zodiac. They loved the story and the characters and wanted to know more about the Monkey King and the other animals of the zodiac... this is the kind of story that works well when it comes to teaching kids about cultures other than their own, as I discovered with Lilly and John. They particularly liked the illustrations by Kenji Ono. I also found them to be fun and colorful, having the same level of energy that Max has. Now, the kids want to read all of Oliver Chin's Chinese zodiac tales."
- Randomly Reading
The Story of Chopsticks,
The Story of Noodles
by Ying Chang Compestine
illustrated by YongSheng Xuan
"...these stories provide an attractive means for teaching readers about Chinese inventions in a non-didactic manner. Instead, readers will find the stories themselves to be interesting and, along the way, they will learn a bit more about China."
