A. New book #1: revised Desert to Dream
---
As many of you know, Burning Man (www.burningman.org) is an annual arts festival that takes place in the Nevada desert. 50,000 people will celebrate its 25th anniversary this coming Labor Day weekend.

Our 2006 photography book on the event sold out. So due to popular demand, we have updated it with two more years of eye-popping imagery.

"San Francisco photographer Barbara Traub has re-released her wonderful book Desert to Dream: A Dozen Years of Burning Man Photography, with a brand new printing that includes 16 more pages and 24 additional photographs."
- Laughing Squid, www.laughingsquid.org

Author Barbara Traub launches her new edition on July 7th in downtown San Francisco at the McLoughlin Gallery (www.mgart.com, 49 Geary Street #200) during the monthly "First Thursday" art walk at 5:30 pm (www.firstthursdayart.com). Come get an autographed copy, gaze at some of her prints, and enjoy a complimentary glass of vino.

More Desert to Dream events will follow around the San Francisco Bay Area, in sync with the 2011 Art Theme of "Rites of Passage".

B. New book #2: Attaboy!
---
Attaboy (www.yumfactory.com) is an artist of all trades: board games, designer toys, plush dolls, and gallery paintings. He publishes the cool art magazine Hi Fructose (www.hifructose.com). Now he has created his first illustrated book!

You Might be a Monster: and other Stories I Made Up
This collection of illustrated poems is in Attaboy's signature style - no-holds-barred & off-the-wall humor. No cows (or monsters) are too sacred to poke fun at!

"While not a 'children's book', it is in the spirit of master story-tellers like Shel Silverstein, Dr. Seuss, and Roald Dahl all of whom wrote tales so sophisticated that sometimes kids had to explain them to their adults."
- Laughing Squid, www.laughingsquid.org

Attaboy launches the book at his booth at the San Diego Comic-Con (www.comic-con.org), where he will also host a panel with fellow Immedium author Brianne Drouhard:
- The New Wave of Children's Books
- Sunday, July 24th at 1 pm:
Join artists/creators Attaboy (You Might Be a Monster & Other Stories), James Kochalka (Johnny Boo), Ragnar (Got Your Nose), Rhode Montijo (Cloud Boy), and Brianne Drouhard (Billie the Unicorn) as they discuss the exciting new wave of innovative books for kids (and the rest of us!) Moderated by Bob Self (Baby Tattoo Books).

C. Billie the Unicorn goes to Con
---
Summer is the season for conventions, so watch out for Billie the Unicorn.

This weekend, author Brianne Drouhard joins Anime Expo (www.anime-expo.org) at the Los Angeles Convention Center. She will autograph at the Animebooks.com booth on Saturday at 1 pm. Then she leads the panel:
Getting into the Animation Industry
- Saturday, July 2nd at 5pm in Room WS2:
a copy of Billie will be the raffle prize for a lucky fan.

Next week, Brianne visits the Cerritos Public Library to present at their 2nd Annual Children's Authors Faire on July 6th at 6:30 pm. Get your Billie books, t-shirts, buttons, charms, and prints.

Finally at San Diego (the Cannes of comic cons), Brianne leads her own panel:
How to Create a Children's Book:
- Saturday, July 23rd at 4 pm in Room 30CDE:
Artists include Eric Gonzales, Mike Collins, Beth Sleven, Erich Haeger, Steph Laberis.

Then she'll sign at the "pop-up" store at Tr!ckster on Sunday at 10 am, across from the convention center:

2. REVIEWS

The Octonauts & the Only Lonely Monster
978-1-59702-005-3, $15.95

"The pictures combine Japanese kawaii (cute) aesthetic with retro hints of The Jetsons and a Putamayo world sensibility. That may sound complicated or taxing, but it isn't. The illustrations are immediately appealing as are the menagerie of characters (polar bear, brown bear, dog, penguin, octopus, cat, bunny, and 'vegimal') who make up the big-hearted crew of Octonauts. A surprising undersea encounter spurs the Octonauts on a mission around the world, which we readers using eyes and hands gladly follow. We meet colorful creatures whose multilingual greetings pepper the pages with imaginary local color. The journey ends in a happy homecoming that revels in the idiosyncrasies of one and all. I loved this book instantly, and I love it still."
- ABC Children's Book Alley

Billie the Unicorn 978-1-59702-024-4, $15.95

"The full-bleed illustrations in a combination of colored pencil and colored markers use subtle matte-white sparkles, dramatically-staged scenes in animation style, and an effective use of contrast to show a dramatic story unfolding. The climax of the story is well-represented visually with an increasing cacophony of detailed flowers..."
