A. May is Asian heritage month
---
In May, celebrate Asian American, Pacific Islander, and Native Hawaiian heritage month. Participate in arts and cultural events in your local community.
"It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength." - Maya Angelou
Diversity is an asset that should be encouraged. Today it also needs to be defended. When reading, children get validation by seeing people that look like them. But kids learn from people who look different, too.
Immedium is dedicated to publishing multicultural stories:
* 50%+ of our books feature AAPI characters.
* 25%+ are bilingual in Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish.
See our lineup of AAPI books here.
B. Storytimes at Oakland's Fairyland
---
Founded 75 years ago, in Oakland, CA, Children's Fairyland is a whimsical 10-acre park by Lake Merritt. In its first year, the playground hosted 500,000 visitors including Walt Disney, who was inspired to make Disneyland.
Designed for parents with little ones (ages 0-8), Fairyland encourages exploration while sparking imagination. This joyful wonderland continues to bring storybooks to life for a new generation of families.
Invited again for AAPI heritage month, Immedium presents storytimes on:
Sunday - May 18th: 1:30 & 2:30 pm
Sunday - May 25th: 1:30 & 2:30 pm
Monday - May 26th: 1:30 & 2:30 pm (Memorial Day holiday)
"No straight lines and a surprise around every corner."
- motto of Children's Fairyland
C. Reading in Los Angeles
---
Starting this Saturday 5/10, author Oliver Chin shares storytimes throughout Southern California to commemorate AAPI heritage month.
This coming week Oliver will read The Year of the Snake at public libraries across Los Angeles county. Then partnering with the Glendale Assistance League, Oliver will present at Horace Mann elementary school.
Seeing the world from other perspectives and traditions inspires everyone to contribute their voices and create a richer harmony.
"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."
- Dr. Seuss

Sora and the Cloud
by Felicia Hoshino
"Sora and the Cloud is like the children's book version of a Murakami novel.... The illustrations are lovely watercolor and ink on rice paper, adding convincing realistic detail to an imaginative story.... this surreal and beautiful journey would make a lovely bedtime story for any child, helping them drift off to sleep dreaming of fluffy clouds and pastel colors..."

Awesome Asian Americans
by Phil Amara and Oliver Chin
illustrated by Juan Calle
"As an educator and a mom I am always looking for books that represent and teach the Asian American experience. The twenty 'stars' highlighted in this book run the gamut from Olympic athletes, politicians, activists, actors, etc., that illustrates that there is no one Asian American experience. In each story, Asian American identity plays and important role in overcoming the challenges of racial inequity and taking pride in culture and heritage in an age appropriate way. The illustrations and graphics make this book really accessible."
