1. NEWS
A. October is National Book Month!
---
This month is known for more than just Halloween. Since 2003, the National Book Foundation celebrates in October the importance of reading, writing, and literature. We support these common goals:
1. Encourage reading:
- children improve knowledge, memory, and vocabulary while reducing stress.
2. Read impactful books:
- appreciate stories which provide diverse role models and important perspectives on relevant topics for kids.
3. Enrich family time
- enjoy books together. Reading aloud and discussions bond families in shared and meaningful activities.
If your family has liked one of our books, try another story in the series or another author! Our mission is to nurture children, inspire them to be creative and curious, and help make lifelong readers!

C. We love school Read-a-thons!
---
West Portal elementary school in San Francisco (SFUSD) is conducting their student read-a-thon this month.
Their PTA has invited author Oliver Chin to present to 3rd grade classes on 10/11 and 2nd graders on 10/18. Oliver looks forward to sharing exciting tales with them!
If your school celebrates reading, invite our authors and artists to visit.
Teachers, librarians, and parents appreciate how our energetic presentations motivate kids to write, draw, and read.
2. REVIEWS
The Discovery of Ramen
by Phil Amara and Oliver Chin, art by Juan Calle
"Travel across the world and back in time with Emma and Ethan as they learn all about the history and tradition of ramen from Dao, an adorable red panda who just happens to be an expert on Asian culture, cuisine, and, of course, all things ramen. Amusing anime-style illustrations show the magical, wide-eyed trio flying over China and Japan, tiptoeing past Taiwan, and floating into outer space on a fun, informative, and savory adventure."

Welcome to Monster Isle
by Oliver Chin, illustrated by Jeff Miracola
"Have you ever been on a family vacation that didn't go so well? After reading this book, I am sure that it won't seem that bad after all... The words tell a fun and adventurous tale, yet it is certainly Jeff Miracola's illustrations that bring this story and it's beasts to life. I love that the Yowie (Australian Bigfoot) makes an appearance! This is definitely a book with kid appeal!"
