A. May is Asian heritage month
---
In May, we celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

The White House proclaimed last week:

"...our Nation celebrates the diversity of cultures, breadth of achievement, and remarkable contributions of these communities; of brave immigrants who, motivated by the promise of possibilities, picked up their lives and found new homes here; of native peoples who have stewarded these lands since time immemorial; and of community leaders shaping a brighter future for us all. Throughout our history, they have represented the bigger story of who we are as Americans and embodied the truth that our diversity is our strength as a Nation."

Last week, at the Asian Pacific Americans in Higher Education (APAHE) conference in Oakland, CA, we met educators who encourage the next generation to learn about and cherish their diversity. This month we'll share our multicultural stories, such as More Awesome Asian Americans, at schools, libraries, and community events.

See our lineup of AAPI books here.

B. Leticia Ordaz encourages kids to read!
---
Recently on Cesar Chavez Day (March 31), author Leticia Ordaz read at the second annual Literacy is Key in Sacramento, CA.

In October 2022, for Hispanic heritage month, West Sacramento's mayor presented the local TV anchor an honorary proclamation for her bilingual stories, which include That Girl on TV Could Be Me.

In April 2022, the Ceres Courier newspaper interviewed Leticia, who said: "I write children's books because I think it's so important for everyone of every color to see themselves represented on the pages of a book. So when you see my books you're going to find diverse characters that look like you."

C. The Octonauts meet the Kardashians
---
Last month, People magazine, Eonline, InTouch, and other news outlets reported on the latest family who provided their child an Octonauts themed birthday party.

True, the 5 year-old daughter of Khloé Kardashian and basketball player Tristan Thompson (NBA champion on the Cleveland Cavaliers; now on the Los Angeles Laker) enjoyed a "pastel/Octonauts extravaganza."

Learn about the Sound Editors and Designers who won an Emmy for the Octonauts TV movie The Ring of Fire on Netflix.

2. REVIEWS

Sora and the Cloud

by Felicia Hoshino

"An adventurous young boy takes flight on a friendly cloud in this delightful whirlwind of a daydream.... The San Francisco setting in combination with the bilingual text deftly shows the child's Japanese American identity.... Children will want to revisit Sora's imaginary adventure again and again."

The Story of Chopsticks

by Ying Chang Compestine

"While it blends fact with fiction, the story is relatable for any child who goes hungry for any reason.... The cut paper illustrations look like mosaics one might find in a church windowpane. They definitely resemble traditional Chinese art of long ago.... The series, Amazing Chinese Inventions, is bilingual.... All of these books are perfect for Multicultural Children's Book Day"
