A. Happy Chinese New Year
---
Chinese New Year starts on February 19th. This is one of our favorite holidays!
Fans are flocking towards The Year of the Sheep, the 10th in our annual series Tales from the Chinese Zodiac.
The lamb Sydney is a heroine that kids can identify with. Artist Alina Chau, who illustrated The Treehouse Heroes and the Forgotten Beast, has created a colorful and delightful world to explore.
Alina will present the story at the Reading Bug (San Carlos, 2/11) and Books, Inc. (Burlingame, 3/1).
We continue to translate the series into Chinese. The newest translations available are the Ox and Horse. Download the Chinese translations for free.
B. The Smithsonian likes Sydney
---
The Smithsonian in Washington D.C. will celebrate Chinese New Year on 2/21 with a full schedule of family activities.
They will read The Year of the Sheep for a storytime at the Freer|Sackler galleries at 1:45 pm.
The Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center's BookDragon praised the illustrations of Alina Chau "whose whimsically watercolored, large-eyed characters seem to beckon you right onto the page."
Also the Huntington Library (San Marino, CA) dedicates the same weekend to their annual festival. Their renovated and expansive gift store features autographed copies of our entire series Tales from the Chinese Zodiac.
C. Fun-filled Southern California tour
---
Author Oliver Chin enjoyed meeting readers at schools, libraries, stores, and museums throughout the Los Angeles area last month.
Along the way, he said hello to Brianne Drouhard, author of Billie the Unicorn. Plus he saw David Derrick, author of Sid the Squid and more humorous animal adventures.
Here is a photo of Dave where he works at Disney Feature Animation.
Meanwhile Oliver visited our pals at Burbank's best comic book store, House of Secrets, which is again restocked with all our latest stories.
At the Pacific Asia Museum, Oliver reunited with Jennifer Wood, artist of The Year of the Dragon, Snake, and Horse. Jennifer dropped by as a surprise guest and added special sketches to the signed copies of grateful visitors.
2. REVIEWS
Play with your Food
By Dave Derrick
"In Derrick's newest book, he takes us to the Permian period, 299-250 million years ago, and gives us a different and quite hilarious version of survival of the fittest...The artwork in this story is vivid, detailed and absolutely delightful. Be sure to look carefully as you read along – most of the pages have other interesting animals in the background, making the illustrations even more fun. I hope you and your little one enjoy this book as much as I did."
- Kids' Brain
Good Dream, Bad Dream
By Juan Calle and Serena Valentino
"In this action-packed, brightly illustrated bilingual book, a common childhood fear is addressed... The English/Spanish text demonstrates care and attention, allowing readers to access words that appropriately portray the hero given the mythology portrayed...
VERDICT: Highly recommended for its broad appeal and adaptability as a read-aloud or independent read."
